Fire Alarm Cellular and IP Communicator Upgrades in Austin
Avenger Security upgrades commercial fire alarm communication from legacy telephone lines to listed cellular, IP or supported dual-path solutions throughout Austin and Central Texas. A communicator upgrade can often preserve a serviceable fire alarm control panel while replacing an obsolete or unreliable reporting path.
The correct communicator depends on the panel, available outputs, operating voltage, standby capacity, required signals, cellular coverage, network availability, supervising station and authority having jurisdiction.
Reasons to consider an upgrade
- Legacy copper or POTS service is being retired or repriced.
- The building moved to VoIP and the existing dialer is unreliable.
- The panel reports telephone-line, DACT or communication trouble.
- The central station is not receiving all required alarm, supervisory, trouble or restoration signals.
- The owner is transferring monitoring providers.
- The existing communicator is obsolete, unsupported or incompatible with the required service.
Communication options
Cellular
A listed commercial fire communicator reports without depending on the building's telephone service. Signal strength, antenna placement, power and supervision must be verified at the site.
IP
An IP path uses the building network. Router power, firewall configuration, network changes and service interruptions must be coordinated with the property or IT team.
Cellular and IP dual path
A compatible dual-path arrangement uses two configured technologies and supervises them according to the listed design and service plan. Dual path should not be promised until the equipment, receiving infrastructure and AHJ requirements are confirmed.
NAPCO StarLink Fire options
Avenger Security commonly uses NAPCO StarLink Fire communicators. Current StarLink Fire MAX2 products include commercial fire models with dual-SIM cellular support and cellular/IP options. Model selection, service plan, wiring and programming are based on the installed fire alarm control unit and the required reporting method.
StarLink in this context is a NAPCO commercial fire-alarm product family, not the satellite internet service.
Compatibility and power review
- Panel manufacturer, model, condition and programming access.
- DACT, relay, serial or other listed connection method.
- 12V or 24V power requirements and available auxiliary current.
- Battery and standby-power calculations.
- Communicator trouble supervision at the fire alarm panel.
- Antenna placement and cellular signal.
- Required alarm, supervisory, trouble and restoration mapping.
- Central-station receiver and account compatibility.
A communicator should not be connected to an unstable panel power supply or overloaded auxiliary circuit. When separate listed power is required, it must be supervised and included in the standby calculation.
Upgrade and testing process
- Review the panel, existing communication equipment and account records.
- Confirm cellular coverage, network availability and power.
- Select the listed communicator and service configuration.
- Install, program and supervise the equipment.
- Send and verify alarm, supervisory, trouble and restoration signals.
- Update account contacts, event descriptions and AHJ documentation.
- Remove or document the abandoned communication path as appropriate.
Monitoring and service terms
Commercial fire monitoring is typically approximately $70–$75 per month. An eligible NAPCO dual-path communicator may be included with a two-year monitoring agreement when stated in the written proposal. Equipment, permits, network work, repairs and special reporting requirements may change the total.
New clients considering new monitoring service can receive an on-site visit and up to one hour of initial consultation at no cost. Existing communication troubleshooting and repairs are billable; our standard existing-system site visit is $195 where applicable.
